Paranormal Activity
And for my second movie review of the week:

I'm sure you have heard all the hype of this movie through trailers shown on television and on the internet showing the audience's reactions while watching this movie. Don't expect Singaporeans to have the same reactions in the theater with our more reserved ways and pride. The most you will hear is whimpering or a scream here and there. This movie follows the same filming style as 'The Blair Witch Project'. However, unlike the 1999 movie, this one has a lot less hand shaking while holding the camera due to the fact that it is propped on a tri-pod during it's night scenes and the audience become voyeurs to the horrors of what the couple can see and cannot see. With the camera angle facing the couples bed, the doorway and the hallway outside, the audience sees more than what the couple is able to see from their angle. The movie is filmed over 21 nights with each night scene being labeled and a time stamp at the bottom right which fast forwards to the scary parts.

This movie was originally made in 2007 and slowly made its way into the theater just recently. Altogether it has 4...yes FOUR..endings. Three were made while filming the original and the fourth was made for the big screen by Steven Spielberg himself. I myself have seen three of the four endings and I can say the one being shown in the theater, although scary, is sort of an anti-climax to the pace of the entire movie.

With the slogan "What happens when you sleep", it should have been "What happens when SHE sleeps" due to the fact that it is one particular demon that has been haunting the woman, Katie, since she was eight years old. Aside from that, it truly is a scary movie..only during the night scenes. The day scenes are boring and draggy and the night scenes are scary but short. Just when things are starting to get exciting, it stops and cuts to the next day. This could work to create anticipation for the movie but also makes it boring at times.

Overall, this movie will scare alot of people and create sleepless nights for many but it did not do it for me. The movie uses the concept of playing with people's imagination of what's around the corner or outside the hallway but after watching 6 seasons of "ghost hunters" on TV, that approach doesn't scare me anymore. Good for one viewing in the theater with a good sound system as the sounds is what makes the movie scary but it does not merit a second viewing as you will already know what will happen.

Rating - 7.5/10

2012
Ok..so this blog is definitely dead cos my life is boring and there's nothing much to talk about so yeah..i've decided to change the objective of this blog to be more of a personal movie review blog since i catch a movie in the theaters at least once a week. Been catching a movie once every week for almost a year now..so might as well do something to remember them all. This week i'll be reviewing two movies..

(Minimal spoilers)

First of:

So I caught this movie on Friday morning (14/11/09) at 12.30am at Lido Shaw House Hall 1 which is 'the biggest digital hall' in Singapore. I've always been interested in the 2012 phenomena and did research on it way before most of the public knew about it through the movie. There is a lot of of different speculation on how the world is going to "end" in 2012 such as an alien planet passing earth's orbit and causing the earth to stop rotating for three days, solar flares from the sun, aliens coming to destroy us.....it goes on and on.

Anyway, this movie focuses on the solar flare from the sun version of the world ending. Suffice it to say, the movie starts with an ominous tone and builds from there. Even with the knowledge that the world is going to end, it still made me guessing what was going to happen next. How the different characters would react to the different situations around them, although I thought that the protagonist and his family seem to be the luckiest people on earth with everything going their way.

The theater was big, the seats were good and spacious and the sound quality was excellent. My seat literally shook and vibrated with all the destruction going on on screen. That just added to the experience. However, don't go into this movie expecting an excellent story and superb acting. This is an end of the world movie after all so just enjoy the effects and destruction. I have to give credit to two spectacular scenes where John Cusack's character and his family escape the destruction in a limousine and later in a small plane. The movie is unintentionally funny when it tries to be serious and the actors are just pawns to something that is bigger than all of them. Oh yeah, the movie is 2 hrs 30mins so be prepared to go to the toilet before it starts and bring a cushion to sit on.

Overall I would say this movie deserves a watch at least once in the theater for its effects but not worth a second watch.

Rating - 7/10.

What hurts the most..
I can take the rain on the roof of this empty house
That don't bother me
I can take a few tears now and then and just let them out
I'm not afraid to cry
Every once in a while
Even though going on with you gone still upsets me
There are days
Every now and again
I pretend I'm ok but that's not what gets me
What hurts the most
Was being so close
And having so much to say
And watching you walk away
And never knowing
What could have been
Not seeing that loving you
Is what I was trying to do
It's hard to deal with the pain of losing you everywhere I go
But I'm doing it
It's hard to force that smile when I see your old friends and I'm alone
Still harder
Getting up, getting dressed
Dealing with this regret
But I know if I could do it over
I would trade
Give away
All the words that I say
Through my heart that I left unspoken
What hurts the most
Was being so close
And having so much to say
And watching you walk away
And never knowing
What could have been
Not seeing that loving you
Is what I was trying to do
Is what I was trying to do
Oh wow oh wow
What hurts the most
Was being so close
And having so much to say
And watching you walk away
And never knowing
What could have been
Not seeing that loving you
Is what I was trying to do
Is what I was trying to do
Yeah...And never knowing
What could have been
Not seeing that loving you
Is what I was trying to do
What hurts the most

Last couple of days have been fun since returning from my trip to Japan. The night after our return Chin Seng invited me to night cycling with his gf, John and Daphne. First we went to eat at East Coast Food Center after renting our bikes and then we cycled from East Coast to Changi. It was really fun and i especially liked the dark areas cos it didn't seem like we were in Singapore anymore. When we reached Changi we sat down at a small coffeeshop and had some snacks and then went to a pub where we had some drinks to celebrate my birthday cos it was April 2nd!

Thx for a great night guys haha..

School starting soon and gotta get back to being serious again..Have fun everyone..while u still can.. =\

Reborn
Haha..just for everyone's info, i did not write the previous post. I just found it on the internet and found it interesting so put it up. Nothing much happening in life, just loads of assignments to get done. Out of the seven deadly sins, mine is sloth. I'm just so lazy it's unbelievable. Even too lazy to change. Something must be done.

Nice Guys..
This is a tribute to the nice guys.. The nice guys that finish last, that never become more than friends, that endure hours of whining and bitching about what assholes guys are, while disproving the very point. This is dedicated to those guys who always provide a shoulder to lean on but restrain themselves to tentative hugs, those guys who hold open doors and give reassuring pats on the back and sit patiently outside the changing room at department stores..

This is in honor of the guys that obligingly reiterate how cute/beautiful/smart/funny/sexy their female friends are at the appropriate moment, because they know most girls need that litany of support... This is in honor of the guys with open minds, with laid-back attitudes, with honest concern.. This is in honor of the guys who respect a girl's every facet, from her privacy to her theology to her clothing style..

This is for the guys who escort their drunk, bewildered female friends back from parties and never take advantage once they're at her door, for the guys who accompany girls to bars as buffers against the rest of the creepy male population, for the guys who know a girl is fishing for compliments but give them out anyway..

For the guys who always play by the rules in a game where the rules favor cheaters, for the guys who are accredited as boyfriend material but somehow don't end up being boyfriends, for all the nice guys who are overlooked, underestimated, and unappreciated, for all the nice guys who are manipulated, misled, and unjustly abandoned, this is for you..

This is for that time she left 40 urgent messages on your cell phone, and when you called her back, she spent three hours painstakingly dissecting two sentences her boyfriend said to her over dinner... And even though you thought her boyfriend was a chump and a jerk, you assured her that it was all ok and she shouldn't worry about it..

This is for that time she interrupted the best killing spree you'd ever orchestrated in Playstation's GTA3 to rant about a rumor that romantically linked her and the guy she thinks is the most repulsive person in the world... And even though you thought it was immature and you had nothing against the guy, you paused the game for two hours and helped her concoct a counter-rumor to spread around the floor..

This is also for that time she didn't have a date, so after numerous vows that there was nothing "serious" between the two of you, she dragged you to a party where you knew nobody, the beer was awful, and she flirted shamelessly with you, justifying each fit of reckless teasing by announcing to everyone: "oh, but we're just friends!" And even though you were invited purely as a symbolic warm body for her ego, you went anyways. Because you're nice like that..

The nice guys don't often get credit where credit is due. And perhaps more disturbing, the nice guys don't seem to get laid as often as they should.. And I wish I could logically explain this trend, but I can't.. From what I have observed on campus and what I have learned from talking to friends at other schools and in the workplace, the only conclusion I can form is that many girls are just illogical, manipulative bitches...

Many of them claim they just want to date a nice guy, but when presented with such a specimen, they say irrational, confusing things such as "oh, he's too nice to date" or "he would be a good boyfriend but he's not for me" or "he already puts up with so much from me, I couldn't possibly ask him out!" or the most frustrating of all: "no, it would ruin our friendship."

Yet, they continue to lament the lack of datable men in the world, and they expect their too-nice-to-date male friends to sympathize and apologize for the men that are jerks.. Sorry, guys, girls like that are beyond my ability to fathom. I can't figure out why the connection breaks down between what they say (I want a nice guy!) and what they do (I'm going to sleep with this complete ass now!)...

But one thing I can do, is say that the nice-guy-finishes-last phenomenon doesn't last forever.. There are definitely many girls who grow out of that train of thought and realize they should be dating the nice guys, not taking them for granted. The tricky part is finding those girls, and even trickier, finding the ones that are single...

So, until those girls are found, I propose a toast to all the nice guys... You know who you are, and I know you're sick of hearing yourself described as ubiqutously nice. But the truth of the matter is, the world needs your patience in the department store, your holding open of doors, your party escorting services, your propensity to be a sucker for a pretty smile...

For all the crazy, inane, absurd things you tolerate, for all the situations where you are the faceless, nameless hero, my accolades, my acknowledgement, and my gratitude go out to you... You do have credibility in this society, and your well deserved vindication is coming...

Sleepless...
Just another sleepless night during term break. Tried to sleep but keep thinking about my life and priorities. What's important in my life? Friends? Studies? Money? I don't know. Confused. Think I should start some sort of system to get my life going again. Priority. A simple 4-syllable word that is so hard to understand.

After thinking about it long and hard, these is my new list of priorities.

1) Studies
2) Studies
3) Studies
4) Exercise & Fitness
5) Money (Job)

Looking at this new list, it gives me alot of work to do. I have alot to brush up on my studies. Don't understand alot of things. For exercise, i need to overcome my greatest obstacle which is laziness. Money-wise, i need to find a part-time job that will not interfere with my studies. I have alot of work to do to get this system going, but i feel determined to get it started and running.

Good luck to me.
